Grade 6 pupil drowns while swimming in River Sondu


A 13-year-old Grade 6 pupil drowned while swimming in River Sondu in Nyamira County on Wednesday.

The deceased was a pupil at Enchoro Methodist Primary School.

Police said the child was swimming in the river at Riasiko Village, Matongo Sub-Location, together with a 23-year-old man when the incident occurred.

The drowning was reported at Matongo Patrol Base at about 5:40pm on September 30.

Police visited the scene and processed and documented the incident.

The boy’s body was recovered and moved to Bethlehem Morgue, Sondu, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.

And the body of a 44-year-old man who was reported missing in a suspected drowning incident was retrieved from the waters near La Marina area in Mombasa County on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Jonathan Ochieng Owiti, who was reportedly constructing floaters at La Marina before the incident.

Coast Guard officers, accompanied by the deceased’s brother, recovered the partially decomposed body at about 4pm on September 30.

The brother positively identified the body before police officers and DCI personnel visited the scene and confirmed the recovery.

The body was moved to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending an autopsy.

Meanwhile, a 70-year-old woman died after a fire broke out in her semi-permanent house in Gucha South, Kisii County, early Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Peninah Kerubo, who was found completely burnt inside her one-bedroom house at Kiabwera Village, Getembe Sub-Location.

Police said the incident was reported at about 4:30am on October 1, prompting officers from the Gucha South Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office and Nyamarambe Police Station to visit the scene.

According to police, a woman, who was passing by, noticed smoke coming from the house and raised an alarm.

Neighbours responded and managed to put out the fire, but found Kerubo had already died from the injuries.

The cause of the fire had not been established, and police said investigations were underway to determine how the fire started.

The scene was processed and documented before Kerubo’s body was moved to Tabaka Mission Hospital mortuary for preservation pending further examination.
