Police in Migori County have arrested a 17-year-old Grade 9 pupil after he allegedly hacked his schoolmate to death with a panga following an attack as the victim walked home from school.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Uriri Sub-County, with the victim succumbing to his injuries while receiving treatment.
According to police, a 17-year-old Grade 9 pupil at Akonjo Primary School, was walking home at around 5.30 p.m. on July 22 when he was allegedly attacked by a fellow pupil from the same school and grade.
The suspect, also aged 17, is alleged to have struck the deceased with a panga. This resulted to deep cuts to the back of the head and forehead.
The injured pupil was rushed to Uriri Sub-County Hospital before being referred to Migori County Referral Hospital for specialised treatment. However, he died while undergoing treatment.
Police officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Uriri and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and commenced investigations.
The body was moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
The suspect was arrested and is being held in police custody as investigations continue ahead of his arraignment.
Police have not yet disclosed the motive behind the attack. As both the victim and the suspect are juveniles, the case will proceed in accordance with Kenya’s child justice procedures.
Elsewhere, police in Nyamira County have launched investigations after a 41-year-old man was found dead with severe head injuries outside his relative’s home in Borabu Sub-County.
The body of Joseph Lusweti, a 41-year-old man, was discovered at about 8 a.m. on Thursday outside the gate of his cousin’s residence, prompting a report to Matutu Police Station.
Police officers visited and processed the scene.
Investigators confirmed that the deceased was lying outside the gate with serious head injuries. This further indicated that he may have been fatally assaulted.
Preliminary investigations established that Lusweti was last seen alive at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
The motive for the killing remains unknown.
The body was moved to Nyansiongo Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible. No arrests had been made by Thursday.
