Harambee Stars Withdraw From CECAFA Four Nations Tournament Ahead Of CHAN

The Harambee Stars have officially pulled out of the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania, just days before the kickoff of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN).

In a statement released on Monday, July 21, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed the withdrawal, citing recommendations from Head Coach Benni McCarthy and his technical team as the reason behind the decision.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) wishes to inform the public that the Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania,” the statement read.

“The decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, led by head coach Benni McCarthy, after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation.”

The CECAFA Four Nations Tournament, which began on Monday, July 21 at Karatu Stadium, is a regional competition involving national teams from East and West Africa.

It was intended as a preparatory event ahead of the CHAN tournament.

Prior to Kenya’s withdrawal, the competition featured four teams: Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal (guest side), and Kenya’s Harambee Stars.

The Harambee Stars were scheduled to play the opening match against Uganda on July 21 and had already arrived in Tanzania before the last-minute pullout.

Following the withdrawal, the FKF stated that the team will return to Kenya to focus fully on preparations for CHAN.

“The team will abort the tournament and return to Kenya to adequately prepare for CHAN, with full focus now shifting to ensure optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” FKF said.

“FKF remains committed to providing the national team with the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride.”

The withdrawal has cast uncertainty over the future of the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament, as the absence of Harambee Stars impacts both competitive balance and tournament logistics.

Organizers were unable to secure a replacement team on short notice, unlike earlier in the week when Senegal stepped in to replace Congo Brazzaville, who withdrew due to logistical challenges.

The FKF’s decision underscores a strategic focus on ensuring the Harambee Stars are best prepared for CHAN, prioritizing long-term success over short-term participation.
