The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has suspended the planned 2026 National Youth Council (NYC) elections following a court order issued by the High Court at Kiambu.
In a statement, the Ministry said it had been served with an order staying the implementation of Gazette Notice No. 10421, through which the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports gazetted the election schedule.
“In compliance with the court order, the elections, which were scheduled to be conducted in three phases, will not proceed on the previously gazetted dates, pending further directions or determination by the Court,” the Ministry stated.
The elections were scheduled to begin at the ward level on October 9, followed by constituency-level elections on October 16, before the national-level polls on October 30, 2026.
The suspension means all three phases will remain on hold until the court issues further directions or determines the matter.

The Ministry assured registered voters, aspirants, youth stakeholders and partners that it remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the electoral process complies with the applicable legal framework.
“The Ministry assures all registered voters, aspirants, youth stakeholders, partners, and the general public of its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the electoral process is conducted in accordance with the applicable legal framework,” the statement added.
Despite the suspension, the Ministry said voter education and public sensitisation activities would continue as stakeholders await further developments.
It urged members of the public to access official information and updates through the National Youth Council’s website and social media platforms.
The statement was signed by Juney Karisa, Head of Public Communications at the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
