History of Capital FM: From Its 1996 Launch to 30 Years of Broadcasting

As Capital FM Kenya is marking 30 years since its launch, celebrating three decades of broadcasting, digital journalism and entertainment in Kenya.

The Nairobi-based English-language radio and multimedia brand broadcasts on 98.4 FM in Nairobi and has expanded its operations to include radio programming and digital news.

Capital FM was founded and launched in 1996 by British media professional Lynda Holt, also known as Linda Holt, who was based in Kenya. Holt secured the frequency and worked with radio professional Phil Matthews to develop the station.

The station’s early broadcasts introduced a music-focused format to Kenya’s radio market, helping establish Capital FM as a notable player in the country’s evolving broadcasting industry.

A major milestone in the station’s history came in 1998 when businessman Chris Kirubi acquired Capital FM, according to Forbes. Capital FM’s historical account says Kirubi’s acquisition ushered in a period of transformation and expansion for the brand.

Kirubi remained closely associated with Capital FM until his death in 2021. The station’s 30th anniversary in 2026 therefore marks three decades since its 1996 launch while also highlighting the different stages of ownership and growth that shaped the broadcaster.

Over the years, Capital FM and its employees have received recognition for their work in journalism, broadcasting and communications. In 2010, the station won two awards at the Kenya Media Network Gala Night for advocacy journalism.

In 2017, Capital Digital Media was recognised at the APA Awards, which celebrate excellence in advertising and brand communication. The station also recognised several employees through internal excellence awards in 2019 for their contributions during the year.

Capital FM’s 30-year journey reflects the development of Kenya’s commercial radio and digital media landscape. From its launch in 1996 under Lynda Holt and Phil Matthews, the station expanded significantly following Kirubi’s acquisition in 1998 and later developed beyond traditional FM broadcasting to establish a digital media presence.

Its history has included industry recognition, employee-related controversies, regulatory matters and court battles, alongside its continued role in Kenya’s radio and digital news industry.

As Capital FM marks three decades, the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the station’s evolution from a new music-focused broadcaster in 1996 to an established radio and multimedia brand in 2026.
