Detectives in Kisii have arrested two suspects linked to an alleged phone theft and hacking racket operating under the cover of a mobile phone repair business in Kisii town.
The operation was uncovered after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kisii Central, working alongside fraud investigators from Mogo Auto Ltd, raided a phone repair shop at Market Plaza.
The suspects, identified as Duncan Ontita Anyaga and Phares Nyagaka Luke, were arrested during the operation. Detectives said the duo is suspected of stealing and unlawfully unlocking mobile phones that had been acquired through financing arrangements.
During the raid, investigators reportedly recovered more than 500 assorted mobile phones and mobile phone motherboards believed to be part of the suspected operation.
Among the devices recovered were several Tecno KM4 handsets financed through Mogo and previously reported missing. According to investigators, some of the devices had been stripped of their security locks and were allegedly being prepared for resale.
The recovery has prompted further investigations into the source of the devices and the suspected network involved in unlocking and reselling financed mobile phones.
The two suspects remain in police custody as detectives complete processing and investigations before they are arraigned in court.
The DCI said it remains committed to dismantling criminal networks involved in the theft, unlawful unlocking and illegal resale of financed mobile phones.
The agency added that it will continue working with private-sector partners to disrupt such operations and ensure individuals suspected of participating in phone-related fraud face the law.
