How to Get Drafts Back on TikTok

Losing a draft on TikTok can be frustrating, especially after spending time editing and perfecting your video. While TikTok makes it easy to save drafts directly within the app, many users often face challenges when these drafts disappear unexpectedly. Whether you’ve switched devices, logged out of your account, or accidentally deleted the app, here’s how to retrieve your TikTok drafts — or understand whether it’s possible to recover them.

Understanding Where Drafts Are Stored

TikTok drafts are saved locally on your device, not on TikTok’s cloud servers. This means that if you uninstall the app, switch phones, or clear the app’s data, all your drafts will be permanently deleted. They are not tied to your TikTok account and therefore cannot be recovered by simply logging back in from another device.

To view your saved drafts:

  1. Open the TikTok app.
  2. Tap on the Profile icon at the bottom right.
  3. You will see a “Drafts” folder on your profile grid if you have any saved drafts.
  4. Tap on the folder to access all saved videos that haven’t been posted.

How to Get Drafts Back After They Disappear

If your drafts are missing, there are a few common scenarios to consider:

  1. App Reinstallation or Device Switch
If you uninstalled the TikTok app or switched to a new phone without backing up data, your drafts are lost permanently. Since drafts are saved locally, they do not transfer between devices or accounts. Unfortunately, TikTok does not have a cloud backup feature for drafts.
  2. Logged Out of Account
Logging out of your account will not delete drafts, but they might not appear until you log back in with the same account. Make sure you’ve signed back into the correct TikTok account.
  3. Drafts Hidden Due to App Glitch
Sometimes, a glitch or bug can cause drafts to disappear temporarily. To fix this, try:

    • Restarting the TikTok app
    • Clearing TikTok’s cache from your phone’s settings
    • Updating the app to the latest version from your app store

If the drafts folder reappears after restarting or updating, your content may be restored. However, if the issue persists, the files may be corrupted or lost.

Preventing Future Draft Loss

To avoid losing drafts in the future, it’s advisable to save a copy of your video before posting. You can do this by:

  • Tapping “Who can watch this video” and selecting “Only me”, then posting it privately.
  • Saving the draft to your camera roll before exiting the editing screen. On the editing page, tap “Next,” then tap the “Save to device” toggle before saving the draft.

Saving a copy ensures you have a backup in your phone gallery in case anything happens to the TikTok app or your device.

What If You Saved a Video But Can’t Find It?

If you previously saved a draft to your device, check your phone’s Gallery or File Manager under a folder named “TikTok” or “DCIM.” Videos saved from TikTok are usually stored here. You may also use your phone’s search feature to locate the video by keywords or file type (e.g., .mp4).
