How to Turn Off Contacts on TikTok

TikTok offers a feature that allows users to sync their phone contacts with the app. This function helps TikTok suggest friends or people you may know by checking which of your phone contacts are already using the platform. While this can be useful for building your network, not everyone is comfortable with the idea of TikTok accessing their contact list. If you prefer more privacy or simply want to reduce the number of suggested accounts, you can easily turn off contact syncing. Here is how to turn off contacts on TikTok.

Stopping TikTok from Accessing Your Contacts

To disable this feature, open your TikTok app and head to your profile page by tapping the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen. Once there, tap the three horizontal lines at the top right to open the menu and go to “Settings and privacy.” Scroll down and tap on “Privacy,” then select “Sync contacts and Facebook friends.” Here, you will see an option labeled “Sync contacts.” If this is turned on, TikTok has permission to regularly scan your phone’s contact list. To turn it off, simply toggle the switch next to it. Once turned off, TikTok will no longer sync your contacts, and your list of suggested friends will stop being updated based on your phonebook.

Removing Previously Synced Contacts from TikTok

Disabling contact syncing stops future updates, but any contacts previously uploaded to TikTok will still be stored on their servers. To fully remove this data, go back to the same “Sync contacts and Facebook friends” page. Below the toggle switch, you’ll find an option to “Remove previously synced contacts.” Tap this and confirm your action. This will delete all the stored contact information TikTok had collected from your phone.

Why Turning Off Contact Syncing Matters

Many users are unaware that allowing apps to access their contacts can impact not only their own privacy but also that of people in their address book. TikTok uses this data to build connection recommendations and target its suggestions. If you value your digital privacy or want to keep your social circle on TikTok separate from your real-life phone contacts, turning off the sync feature is a smart choice.
