Iko Nini podcast studios robbed, crew loses equipment and valuable content

Popular Kenyan podcast platform Iko Nini has suffered a major setback after its studio was broken into by unknown individuals, leading to the loss of high-value equipment and irreplaceable content.

The studio, owned by media personality Mwafreeka, was reportedly raided in the early hours of April 12 by three unidentified men who executed the theft in a calculated manner.

According to initial reports, the suspects managed to gain entry without damaging the padlock, raising concerns about how they bypassed the studio’s security systems.

Mwafreeka also revealed that the studio had no insurance cover, meaning the team will have to bear the full cost of replacing the stolen equipment, an expense that could significantly disrupt production. Photo: Iko Nini/Facebook

Inside Job Or Sophisticated Break-in?

Details emerging from the incident indicate that the robbers appeared to know exactly what they were looking for.

They made away with two high-end Sony A7 IV cameras, complete with zoom and 25mm lenses, as well as camera stands, essential tools used in the production of the widely followed podcast.

Interestingly, other valuable items within the studio, including computers, were left untouched, suggesting the operation may have been targeted rather than random.

Even more puzzling is the fact that the padlock was reportedly opened without being broken and later placed inside a laundry basket, which the suspects used to carry the stolen gear as they fled the scene.

CCTV Captures Daring Raid

Security footage captured the three suspects inside the premises, each dressed differently and carrying tools believed to have been used during the break-in.

One suspect was seen with a crowbar, while another wore gloves and handled what appeared to be cutting equipment.

The incident has sparked concern among content creators, highlighting growing security risks facing digital studios and independent media houses.

Police Launch Investigations

Following the break-in, the matter was reported at Akila Police Station, prompting a response from officers, including detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and forensic experts who visited the scene.

Mwafreeka also revealed that the studio had no insurance cover, meaning the team will have to bear the full cost of replacing the stolen equipment, an expense that could significantly disrupt production.

Sh 100,000 Reward Announced

In a bid to recover the stolen items and bring the perpetrators to justice, the Iko Nini podcast team has announced a cash reward for anyone with useful information.

The team shared the following appeal:

“We’ve been robbed. Help us identify the robbery suspects! We are offering a Ksh 100,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the three men who robbed our studio and stole 2 Sony cameras.”

They added:

“A sad day for Iko Nini podcast. Our two cameras gone, content gone. It’s a loss. Help get the robbers and get our equipment back.”

The stolen cameras reportedly contained valuable recorded material, dealing a double blow to the team, not just financially, but creatively as well.

Growing Impact on Kenya’s podcast industry

Launched in 2021, the Iko Nini podcast has grown into one of Kenya’s most influential digital platforms, tackling politics, social issues, and entertainment while amassing a large online following.

The robbery now underscores the vulnerability of such independent productions, many of which operate without comprehensive security or insurance safeguards.

As investigations continue, the Iko Nini team is urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious sale of professional camera equipment that could be linked to the theft.
