INS Trikand in Mombasa for strategic naval engagements with Kenya


The Indian Navy’s frontline guided missile frigate, INS Trikand, arrived in Mombasa on April 7, 2026 as part of its ongoing deployment in the South West Indian Ocean Region.

The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation and deepening bilateral ties with Kenya.

 

The port call coincides with the visit of VAdm Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, to Kenya.

During the stay, INS Trikand will participate in professional, cultural, and social engagements, and deliver essential stores to the Kenya Defence Forces.

The ship’s Commanding Officer was also scheduled to meet with senior government officials.

 

Upon departure, INS Trikand will conduct a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with units of the Kenya Navy, facilitating the exchange of best practices and enhancing bilateral maritime interoperability.

The visit aligns with India’s vision of MAHASAGAR – Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions – reinforcing shared strategic and security interests in the Indian Ocean Region.

Vice Admiral K. Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India’s Western Naval Command, and Dr. Adarsh Swaika, High Commissioner of India to Kenya, met General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Defence Forces of Kenya, in Nairobi.

The officials discussed ways to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, focusing on “capacity building, training exchanges, and enhancing institutional linkages.”

They also held talks with Patrick Mariru, Principal Secretary for Defence, reviewing the growing India–Kenya partnership through regular high-level visits and institutional dialogues.

In Mombasa, Vice Admiral Swaminathan met Major General Paul Otieno, Commander of the Kenya Navy, to explore “strengthening maritime cooperation, training exchanges, and avenues for enhanced collaboration in the Western Indian Ocean Region.”

The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to increase operational interoperability between the two navies.
