Kenya and Finland have reaffirmed their strong diplomatic relations and pledged to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and global peacebuilding.
The renewed commitment was made during bilateral talks between President William Ruto and President Alexander Stubb of Finland, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
President Ruto emphasized the value Kenya places on its relationship with Finland, noting shared democratic values and a common interest in promoting peace, stability, and economic opportunity across the globe.
“We value our close diplomatic ties with Finland and are committed to strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” said President Ruto.
The two leaders discussed plans to expand trade and investment between their countries, focusing on areas such as green technology, digital innovation, education, and sustainable development.
They also highlighted the need for a more inclusive global economic system that supports shared prosperity and climate resilience.
On the global stage, the discussions centered around deepening multilateral engagement, with both countries reaffirming their strong commitment to conflict resolution and peacebuilding in some of the world’s most volatile regions.
“Our focus is on expanding trade and investment while deepening multilateral engagement, especially in advancing global and regional peace and security,” President Ruto stated.
Kenya and Finland expressed shared concern over ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia, agreeing that lasting peace in these regions is essential for long-term development and global stability.
“We share a strong commitment to resolving conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia, recognising that peace is the cornerstone of growth and shared prosperity,” President Ruto added.
The meeting reinforced the long-standing partnership between Kenya and Finland, which spans sectors such as education, health, environmental sustainability, and governance.
The two nations also committed to continued cooperation in multilateral forums, including the United Nations, to address pressing global challenges through diplomacy and collaboration.
