Kenya’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector posted strong growth in 2024, with the value of output rising by 8.3% to Sh 701.3 billion, up from Sh 647.4 billion in 2023.
According to newly released data, the sector’s value addition increased to Sh 364.5 billion from Sh 339.5 billion the previous year, reflecting growing demand for digital services and infrastructure.
Mobile subscriptions jumped from 66.7 million in 2023 to 71.4 million in 2024, raising mobile penetration to 136.1 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.
Mobile money usage also expanded, with subscriptions rising by 11.3% to 42.3 million, translating to 80.7 per 100 inhabitants.
Despite the growth in mobile money accounts, the value of deposits transacted through agents slightly dipped to Sh 6.06 trillion in 2024 from Sh 6.12 trillion the year before.
Mobile-to-mobile domestic voice traffic soared by 16.9% to 103.7 billion minutes in 2024, up from a 13.5% increase recorded in 2023.
International voice traffic also climbed significantly, rising by 21.1% to 1.3 billion minutes.
Internet and data usage surged as well. Mobile broadband data usage via roaming jumped by 35.4% to 2.2 billion gigabytes, while SMS usage edged up to 54.7 billion messages from 52.4 billion in 2023.
The number of total fixed and wireless internet subscriptions grew by 10.5% to 57.8 million, representing 110.3 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants.
Used internet bandwidth increased from 11 million Mbps in 2023 to 13.4 billion Mbps in 2024, largely driven by increased demand for satellite internet connectivity.
While digital adoption grew, cyber threats also spiked. Reported online crimes nearly doubled to 3.5 billion cases in 2024, with most attributed to system vulnerabilities.
Meanwhile, the growing volume of digital devices led to an increase in electronic waste, which rose from 51.9 thousand metric tonnes in 2023 to 53.6 thousand tonnes in 2024.
Kenya’s flagship tech hub, Konza Technopolis, reported significant gains in both revenue and investment.
Revenue generated at Konza rose to Sh 252.4 million in 2024 from Sh 191.3 million in 2023.
The number of investors at the Technopolis grew to 70, up from 56 the previous year.
Annual investment into the project surged by 27.3% to Sh 13.6 billion, raising total cumulative investment at Konza to Sh 83.5 billion by the end of 2024.
