Kericho County Governor Erick Mutai is experiencing a rough Friday evening after he was impeached by Members of the County Assembly (MCA) for the second time.
Mutai’s second impeachment unfolded through a chaotic session on Friday, August 15, 2025, Nairobi News has learnt.
The impeachment motion was moved by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony and received the overwhelming support of 33 MCA who voted in favour of his removal from office.

The speaker of the Kericho County Assembly had difficult time bringing order to the house after confirming Mutai’s impeachment.
The specific reasons for the Governor’s impeachment and the genesis of the chaos experienced in the house are yet to be made public.
14 MCAs voted to save Mutai but 33 out of 47 MCAs voted in favor of the motion to remove him from office.
It should be noted that the vote, which was conducted electronically surpassed the required two-thirds majority.
This publication understands Mutai’s latest impeachment was in contrast with the previous one in which 31 MCAs voted against him.
He was, however, saved at the Senate.
His previous impeachment was marked by chaos immediately after the Speaker announced the results.
The previous impeachment motion accused the Governor of abuse of office, mismanagement of county funds and gross violation of the Constitution.

Mutai and his lawyers were present during the motion which was carried out during a special sitting .
Efforts by his legal team to request the assembly to vote by roll call did not bore any fruits.
Well, with his current impeachment, the matter will now proceed to the Senate where he will have the opportunity to defend himself.
Mutai will permanently be removed from office should the Senate confirm the impeachment.
In the meantime, the politician remains in his position the Kericho County Governor.
