KURA announces nighttime lane closure on Ngong road ahead of flyover works

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary lane closure along Ngong Road near the Junction Mall area tonight, Monday, November 10, 2025, as part of ongoing preparations for the construction of a steel flyover.

In a statement issued on Monday, KURA said the closure will affect one lane from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, to allow for the maneuvering of heavy machinery ahead of the major steel structure erection.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution during this period as heavy machinery operations will be underway,” the authority said.

This follows a previously announced 20-day night disruption on the same road, scheduled from Tuesday, November 18, to Wednesday, December 10, 2025, running daily from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., excluding Sundays. During this period, traffic will be diverted between Nairobi City County Training School and Kenya Science Campus to maintain two-way movement within the affected section.

Motorists are urged to follow traffic signs and directions from police officers and traffic marshals and anticipate minor delays while the works are ongoing.

The lane closures form part of the Ngong Road Flyover Project, aimed at easing long-standing congestion along this busy corridor connecting Nairobi’s city center to residential areas including Dagoretti, Karen, and Ngong.

The flyover, located near The Junction Mall, will feature modern infrastructure designed to improve traffic flow and urban mobility. Key elements include:

  • Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities for cyclists and pedestrians
  • Modern street lighting to enhance visibility at night
  • Upgraded drainage systems to reduce flooding risks during rainy seasons

Funded through a concessional loan of sh 3.58 billion (EUR 25.3 million) from the Spanish Corporate International Fund (FIEM), the project is expected to be completed by July 2027.

Once completed, the flyover will significantly reduce traffic congestion, save travel time for motorists and public transport users, and enhance road safety in the area. The project is part of the Kenyan government’s broader efforts to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate long-term urban growth.
