Kwale Prosecution Secures 14-Day Detention Order for 33 Suspects Linked to Criminal Gang

The prosecution in Kwale has successfully obtained a 14-day detention order for 33 men accused of being members of a criminal gang that has been terrorizing residents of Diani.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the suspects are alleged to have subjected local residents to various forms of violence, including robbery, assault, and intimidation.

The gang is said to have been operating in the area for several months, creating fear and insecurity among the population.

Authorities have expressed concern over the rise in gang-related activities in the region and have vowed to take swift action to restore peace to the affected communities.

On March 25, 2025, the State filed an application through an affidavit sworn by Chief Inspector Kennedy Mutunga, requesting the Kwale Law Courts to detain the suspects for 14 days to allow for comprehensive investigations.

The ODPP emphasized the importance of the detention to gather further evidence and identify any possible accomplices.

Resident Magistrate Joy Mtimba granted the request, ordering that the suspects be held at various police stations across Kwale, Diani, and Msambweni.

The authorities will continue to question the suspects and search for additional evidence related to their criminal activities.

The case is scheduled for mention on April 8, 2025, when the court will review the progress of the investigation.

The ODPP has indicated that further charges may be filed depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
