Mixed reactions as marketer Noni claims deejays with no huge following shouldn’t be paid

For the longest time now, music deejays have been known for filling up clubs with fans who usually follow them wherever and whenever they perform.

With that said, most events promoters and marketers have been booking mix masters with the hope that their events will be sold out thanks to the revelers attracted by the deejays playing at different venues.

However, some music players have been receiving payments and other complimentary treats from their hosts but pull no crowds, something that has been hurting most clubs.

This has forced a vocal Kenyan events promoters and marketer Noni Karanja to crack the whip by announcing that she will no longer be booking entertainers who cannot fill up clubs and other venues.

Taking to her Instagram page on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Noni claimed that gone are the days that deejays would be paid, get complimentary drinks but fail to give their hosts returns on their investments.

According to Noni, mix masters who cannot fill up clubs should not expect payments or even drinks following flopped events.

“Polite note: From now on, I’m only booking deejays who bring value to the club. Don’t expect me to book you if you can’t pull a crowd. I’m not in the business of paying deejays to come solo to the club, drink your complimentary bottle and expect a check at the end of the night. Please and thank you,” she wrote in Instagram.

Her declaration sparked mixed reactions on social media with quite a number of netizens, specifically deejays and music lovers urging her to cut the deejays some slack.

A cross section of social media users reiterated that it is the word of clubs to market their events to ensure they attract many revelers and not leaving the work solely to deejays.

A revered Kenyan deejays, DJ Rudeboy is among the many netizens who differed with Noni.

In his post following Noni’s declaration, Rudeboy posted.

“Kazi sasa ni kuamsha watu kwa estate wakuje gig yako… pia uanze kucancel mabeshte hawakuji gigs zako 😆😆😆,”

His sentiments were echoed by Kiss 100’s DJ Xclusive who insisted that the work of a deejay is to ensure an already prepared crowd gets entertained all night long and not to market or pull the masses.

Other Kenyans too rallied behind local deejays holding that clubs should not leave deejays with the burden of pulling crowds to their establishments.
