Mother arrested after infant dies in Lake Victoria incident in Siaya


Police in Siaya County are investigating a tragic incident in which a one-year-old girl died after allegedly being thrown into Lake Victoria by her mother, who then reportedly attempted to take her own life.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Goye Beach in Bondo Sub-County, police said.

According to police, 30-year-old woman who is a resident of Gem Akala, allegedly threw her one-year-old daughter into the waters of Lake Victoria before jumping into the lake herself in an apparent suicide attempt.

Members of the public rescued the woman and escorted her to Usenge Police Station.

Police officers who responded to the scene, with the assistance of local residents, later retrieved the body of the child from the lake. The officers said the body had no visible physical injuries.

Investigators indicated that the woman is believed to have been experiencing mental health challenges, although the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The child’s body was moved to Got Agulu Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination, while the mother remains in police custody as investigations continue.

And a 32-year-old man died after he was found with multiple stab wounds by the roadside near Kapkoros Market in Bomet County.

Police said the victim, identified as Nicholus Kipsang Cheruiyot from Merigi area in Bomet East Sub-County, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Kapkoros Level IV Hospital.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the injured man was found lying by the roadside near Kapkoros Market by an unidentified member of the public, who took him to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Police who visited the hospital found the body bearing multiple visible stab wounds. The scene was documented before the body was moved to Longisa Mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination.

Detectives have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and to identify those responsible. The identity of the Good Samaritan who rescued the victim has not yet been established.
