Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has written a strongly-worded letter to Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, accusing him of abdicating his constitutional duty to protect life and property, and alleging a series of attacks on him, his family, and his supporters.
In the letter dated April 12, Gachagua claims that his personal security was withdrawn in a deliberate attempt to expose him to danger.
“You withdrew my security in a clear thought-out scheme and backward conspiracy to make me vulnerable to organized criminal gangs, in cohort with the police and other security agencies,” he wrote.
He cited several incidents of violence that he believes were politically motivated and executed with the knowledge, or even participation, of security personnel.
“On November 28, 2024, during a funeral service in Limuru, I was attacked by organized criminal gangs.
My vehicles were damaged beyond repair, women and children were roughed up, and property of unknown value was destroyed all as police watched,” he stated.
“That was an assassination attempt that failed.”
According to Gachagua, no arrests have been made despite the attackers being publicly identified and their photos circulating online for over a month.
He also claimed that leaders aligned with him, such as Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, have been harassed instead of being protected.
He went on to detail several other incidents, including:
- December 28, 2024 – An alleged assassination attempt in Shamata, Nyandarua County, where an inspector of police, “well known” to the IG, allegedly lobbed teargas into a crowd to create chaos and facilitate an attack.
- January 18, 2025 – A prayer rally in Nyeri Town where Gachagua’s wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, was forced to flee after an alleged gang disrupted the event. “Police in civilian clothes joined forces with the criminals,” he wrote.
- March 23, 2025 – An attack at ACK St. Peters Cathedral in Nyeri, where Gachagua claimed churchgoers were harassed and vehicles stoned while police “deliberately and idly watched.”
- March 29, 2025 – An alleged crackdown in Naivasha where a group of police officers, under the command of OCPD Mr. Keler, reportedly beat and tear-gassed residents who had gathered to welcome Gachagua.
- April 6, 2025 – A reported attack at a church service at PCEA Kasarani East Parish in Mwiki, Nairobi, where goons wielding machetes stormed the venue.
“You, Mr. Kanja, are clearly perpetuating crime and violence,” Gachagua stated. “Your silence is the loudest ever.”
Gachagua further referenced his time as Mathira MP (2017–2022) and later as Deputy President, emphasizing that the impeachment that removed him from office in 2024 was “based on flimsy and trumped-up charges.”
He concluded by urging the Inspector General to remember his constitutional mandate under Article 245 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, which establishes the independence of the police service.
“You have a constitutional responsibility to protect life and property. Yet, you dine in the oligarchy and anarchism of the current unpopular regime,” Gachagua wrote.
The former Deputy President warned that continued inaction by the police would only escalate tensions and undermine national peace and unity.
As of publication, the Inspector General’s office had not responded to the letter.
