Nairobi County announces annual verification of weighing and measuring instruments

The Nairobi City County Government, through its Legal Metrology Department, has announced the commencement of the annual verification and certification of all weighing and measuring instruments used in trade across the county.

In a public notice issued pursuant to Section 27 (1) of the Weights and Measures Act (CAP 513, Revised Edition 2012 [1989]), the county government directed all traders and members of the business community to present their instruments for inspection and stamping.

“Pursuant to the provisions of CAP 513 Section 27 (1) of the Weights and Measures Act (Revised Edition 2012) (1989), the Nairobi City County Government hereby notifies the business community and traders in Nairobi that the annual verification and certification of Weighing and Measuring Instruments will be undertaken,” the notice stated.

The county government said the exercise is aimed at ensuring that all weighing and measuring instruments used in commercial transactions are accurate and compliant with legal standards, in a bid to eliminate cases of inaccurate measurements in marketplaces.

According to the notice, all types of weighing and measuring instruments within the county must be presented at designated stamping stations located in various sub-counties.

Traders will be required to pay the stipulated fees, after which compliant instruments will be issued with a Verification Certificate.

Instruments weighing 500 grams or more may be tested using district counter-check measures, while fixed instruments will be verified at their installed locations.

If found accurate and compliant with the law, inspectors will stamp or mark the equipment using plugs, leads, seals, paint, or other approved methods to indicate certification.

“If an inspector is satisfied that a weight, measure, or instrument brought to them is accurate and otherwise in accordance with the Act, they shall stamp such weight, measure, or instrument,” the notice added.

The verification exercise will run from February to May 2026, with stamping stations set up in all sub-counties across Nairobi.
