The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a safety advisory to motorists ahead of the long December school holiday, urging heightened caution to ensure the safe travel of schoolchildren.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 7, the Authority emphasized the urgent need for increased road safety measures as schools across the country prepare to close in the coming weeks.
“As schools prepare to close, children across the country will be eagerly heading home,” NTSA noted. “We are calling on all road users to prioritize their safety.”
To that end, NTSA announced it will scale up its Operation #WatotoWafikeSalama campaign, aimed at protecting children on the road during the holiday season.
The operation will include strengthened road safety education, enhanced patrols, and stricter enforcement of traffic rules along major transport routes.
The Authority also urged drivers to exercise extra caution due to ongoing wet weather, which has created hazardous road conditions, including slippery surfaces and reduced visibility.
“Motorists must adapt to these challenging conditions and ensure the safe journey of every child,” the statement read.
NTSA issued several key safety reminders for drivers: Obey traffic rules and model responsible behavior, Adjust to wet-weather driving by reducing speed, increasing following distance, and using headlights appropriately, Avoid flooded roads and follow the safety principle: “Turn around, don’t drown,” Ensure seatbelt use for all passengers, especially children and Conduct vehicle safety checks, including inspection of tyres, brakes, wipers, and lights to ensure they are in good working condition.
“The safety of children during school closures is a collective responsibility,” NTSA added.
“Every motorist has a role to play in ensuring children reach their destinations safely.”
