One killed by lightning in Kilifi as flooding disrupts Narok Highway

One person has died following a lightning strike in Kilifi County as heavy rains continue to pound several parts of the country, with flooding also disrupting transport along a key highway in Narok County.

Authorities said the fatal incident occurred in Kaloleni Sub-County, where the victim was struck by lightning during a storm accompanied by strong whirlwinds. The body was later retrieved and taken to Mariakani Hospital mortuary.

Kilifi County Commissioner David Wanyonyi said officials have intensified public awareness campaigns to enhance safety during the ongoing extreme weather conditions.

“We are on the ground sensitizing residents on safety measures and urging communities to remain cautious during storms,” Wanyonyi said.

Meanwhile, in Narok County, heavy rains have caused flooding and significant silt deposition along the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) Road at Kedong Ranch near Suswa, severely affecting traffic flow.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has since deployed teams to clear the silt and restore access along the busy transport corridor.

Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiata advised motorists to avoid the affected section and use alternative routes.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road at Kedong Ranch and instead use alternative routes including Ngong–Suswa, Nairobi–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Narok–Narok and Nairobi–Naivasha–Longonot–Suswa,” Lotiata said.

The incidents come amid growing concern over the impact of ongoing heavy rains across the country, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation and issue advisories aimed at minimizing risks to life and property.
