Police Explain Cancellation Of Women’s Group AGM Over Land Dispute

Police have clarified why they canceled the annual general meeting (AGM) of the Kiambu-based Lari Nyakinyua Women’s Group, citing security concerns over a disputed piece of land in Oljorai, Gilgil.

The meeting was initially approved but later revoked after intelligence reports warned of a possible confrontation between the women’s group and current settlers on the land. Lari Nyakinyua chairman Peter Gachie was informed of the decision and instructed to notify members.

“While the meeting was initially cleared by the police, intelligence reports later indicated that a confrontation was likely. As a result, the meeting was canceled on security grounds, and notice of cancellation was issued to the group’s leadership,” the police statement read.

Despite the warning, some members attempted to proceed with their travel plans to Gilgil, prompting security forces to intercept them at Gilgil Junction. Rift Valley Regional Police Commander intervened to engage with the women and diffuse the standoff peacefully. Authorities have urged the group to comply with police directives as the government works towards resolving the land dispute.

The Lari Nyakinyua Land Dispute

The dispute revolves around an 8,000-acre piece of land that Lari Nyakinyua Women’s Group claims to own. The group secured a title deed for the land on July 24, 2020, through an exchange agreement with Solai Ruyobei Farm Limited. Under the deal, Lari Nyakinyua members were allocated land in Oljorai, while Solai Ruyobei Limited received land in Solai, Rongai sub-county.

However, the group alleges that despite having valid ownership documents, senior government officials and influential politicians have taken over sections of the land, preventing them from occupying it.

Speaking in September 2024, Chairman Peter Gachie claimed that over 200 acres in Oljorai had been seized by politicians who have refused to vacate. Since late 2024, the group has faced resistance whenever they attempt to settle on the land.
