Rapper Dogo Janja risks imprisonment after shooting form 4 student on leg


Popular Tanzanian rapper Dogo Janja is wading in murky waters after shooting a form four student on the leg.

Nairobi News has learnt Dogo Janja, who is a licensed gun holder allegedly shot 18-year-old student, Bakari Halifa on the night of August 23, while heading to his brother’s house for dinner.

According to police reports, the incident occured in Arusha, where Dogo Janja is based.

Act Of Self Defense

 

Reports from Tanzania intimate that Bakari, who is the rapper’s close friend ambushed him while alighting from his car at around 11.30pm.

In his defense, the rapper whose real name is Abdulaziz Abubakari claimed he was forced to open fire in an act of self defense.

Dogo claimed that Bakari, together with his accomplices were a thieves who wanted to attack him.

However, his claims have been shot down by Bakari’s family who have come out to seek justice for their own.

Speaking during an interview with Bongo 5, the victim’s sister insisted that Dogo Janja should face justice for harming her brother who is the only hope for their family.

“My brother is not and has never been a thief. Hata jana nilijua wameniulia. We demand justice for our brother,” the sister said amidst sobs.

Her sentiments were echoed by her other brother who called out Dogo Janja for the heinous act, demanding justice for Bakari.

“Angekuwa diwani ashapitishwa ingekuwaje?” The brother noted.

 

Police Issues Statement

 

Following the incident and subsequent development, Tanzanian police issued an official statement, informing the public that it had launched investigations in a bid to get to the bottom of the matter.

“Abdulaziz Abukari, a resident of Levolosi, Arusha, while alighting from his vehicle, claimed that he was almost attacked by Bakari Halifa and his accomplice who had weapons, forcing him to use his gun to protect himself. The two accused are being held at the police station as the investigation continues,” the statement read in part.

Nairobi News understands Dogo Janja is vying for a Councillor seat in Ngarenaro, Arusha, where he was born and raised.

With the scandal, chances of him clinching the seat remain minute.

He also risks a jail term should police conclude investigations and discover he was on the wrong.
