Tragic End to a Promising Career
Kimani Mbugua, 29, died on the night of October 14, 2025, in what his family confirmed was death by suicide.
He had been receiving treatment at a rehabilitation facility in Mombasa, reportedly under Mike Sonko’s sponsorship, after years of battling mental health challenges.
Speaking to the press after his son’s demise, Kimathi revealed that Kimani’s final words were filled with resignation and a yearning for peace.
“He said, ‘I know I have taken myself; I have been a burden to myself, and I don’t want to be a burden any further,’” Kimathi recounted.
“He mentioned that he had chosen to rest in the hands of God,” he added, describing his son as a brilliant yet deeply troubled young man.
Family Rules Out Foul Play
The family has ruled out any foul play in the journalist’s death, stating that investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and CCTV footage from the rehabilitation centre confirmed that Kimani took his own life.
“We are not blaming anyone. The DCI came and took the body. The footage clearly shows what happened. We have accepted it, since he chose to rest, who are we to say otherwise?” Kimathi stated.
