Some neighbourhoods in Mombasa have, for years, carried the burden of a bad reputation, mostly linked to crime, insecurity, and wayward youths who end up on the wrong side of the law due to limited opportunities and exposure.
However, in a bold move aimed at changing this narrative, music executive Steve Kipande, popularly known as Daddi Q of GRIP MUSIC N PICTURES LIMITED, teamed up with Talentos Beach Resort in Likoni to create a platform that brought together rappers and other creatives from some of the county’s most notorious estates, specifically Likoni and Kisauni.

Through the collaboration, Kipande and Talentos Beach Resort hosted a six-day-long talent search and music festival, giving upcoming artistes from the aforementioned areas a rare opportunity to showcase their skills before live audiences, industry players, and fellow creatives.
According to Kipande, the idea behind the event was simple but intentional: To keep youths away from crime, especially during the festive season when idleness often pushes many into illegal activities.
The event, dubbed the Shelly Beach Festival, was hosted at Talentos Beach Resort in Likoni and ran from December 26 to December 31, 2021, transforming the beach side venue into a hub of hip hop, rap, and raw coastal talent.
Interestingly, the initiative traces its roots to Kipande’s earlier efforts in Likoni and Kisauni where he had been recording songs for various creative youths, some of whom were believed to be former members of the dreaded Panga Boys gang and the likes.

Through music mentorship and studio exposure, Kipande saw first-hand how talent, when nurtured, could redirect lives once headed for destruction.
As the festival unfolded, many were thrown aback by the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed throughout the six days at Talentos Beach Resort, located in Likoni, Mombasa .
Despite the fact that most of the performers and their fans hailed from areas often labelled as crime hotspots, the event concluded without any form of violence or unrest.
The success of the Shelly Beach Festival earned widespread praise, with many lauding Steve Kipande and Talentos Beach Resort for proving that structured platforms, trust, and support can unlock the positive potential of the youth.
Kipande noted that his ultimate goal was to show the world that the Coast is rich with talent, and that young people when given a chance, can channel their energy into creativity, productivity, and greatness instead of crime.

In the end, the Shelly Beach Festival stood not just as a music showcase, but as a powerful statement: talent, not crime, is the true identity of Mombasa’s youth.
Nairobi News understands the highlight of the festival will be going down on Wednesday, December 31, at the Talentos Beach Resort.
Reports from Mombasa indicate that The final day of the festival will be one for the books as both artistes and their fans had hinted at filling up the venue, with even many other confirming attendance days prior to the D-Day.
