The NYOTA program is transforming youth empowerment in Kenya by tackling two of the biggest challenges facing young people today: unemployment and lack of practical skills.
Launched as a structured initiative combining training, mentorship, and financial support, NYOTA goes beyond handouts, offering young Kenyans the tools, confidence, and opportunities needed to thrive.
Dual Approach: Skills and Capital
NYOTA operates on two main pillars. The On-the-Job Experience (OJE) program connects youth with master craftsmen across the country for six months, providing hands-on training and workplace exposure.
Participants receive a monthly stipend of Sh6,000, while the government covers training, assessment, and certification costs.
The program bridges the gap between formal education and the job market, ensuring young people are job-ready.
The second pillar, Business Start-Up Capital, empowers young entrepreneurs to start or expand small businesses.
Recently, Sh126 million was disbursed to 5,040 young businesspeople in counties including Lamu, Kilifi, and Tana River. This initiative encourages self-reliance and wealth creation while fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.
By combining skill development with financial support, NYOTA equips youth to either secure employment or generate their own income, making the program sustainable and impactful.
Aligning Youth Empowerment with National Development
NYOTA’s strategic approach goes beyond individual empowerment. By creating a skilled workforce and nurturing entrepreneurship, the program contributes to reducing youth unemployment, stimulating local economies, and developing a pipeline of artisans, technicians, and business leaders capable of supporting Kenya’s industrial and service sectors. Participation in NYOTA is made simple, with registration available via *254#, ensuring even youth in remote areas can join. The program targets youth across all counties, reducing financial and social barriers and reaching tens of thousands nationwide.
