Tragedy as Jua Kali worker killed with hammer during money dispute in Nairobi

Detectives are investigating an incident where a 42-year-old casual labourer was killed with a hammer following a dispute over money along Landhies Road in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in the Jua Kali area, where the victim, identified as Willis Otieno Okumu alias “Otis”, worked as a casual labourer.

According to police, officers who responded to the scene found Okumu lying on his back with a serious injury to the back of his head.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Okumu was allegedly attacked by a colleague identified only by the alias “Mandevu” following a disagreement over money paid by a customer.

The two men are reported to have been working together at the Jua Kali site.

Police processed the scene before the victim’s body was moved to Nairobi City Funeral Home, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

The suspect fled the scene following the incident and remained at large as of Wednesday afternoon.

Police have launched efforts to trace and arrest the suspect.

Meanwhile, a15-year-old girl died at Kapenguria Referral Hospital after allegedly being sexually assaulted and physically assaulted by a known neighbour in Kipkomo, West Pokot County.

Police said the was allegedly attacked at about 8.30pm on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, while heading to her home in Kamaua village.

According to police, the girl was rescued after the incident and taken for medical attention while bleeding from the mouth and complaining of severe chest and back pain, which she reportedly sustained after being forcefully pressed by the assailant.

She was admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after developing breathing complications but died at about 3am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment.

Her body is being preserved at Kapenguria Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Police have arrested a 49-year-old man, who is being held in custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death and the alleged sexual assault.

The case follows an earlier mob-justice incident linked to the alleged assault.
