Two dead after fire-damaged building collapses at Gikomba Market

Two people were confirmed dead after a fire-damaged building collapsed at Gikomba Open Air Market in Nairobi, trapping several people beneath the rubble.

According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday in Block B of the market. Authorities said the building had been severely weakened during the devastating Gikomba market fire that broke out last Sunday.

Police officers who responded to the scene established that a group of street children had entered the unstable structure to collect scrap metal when it suddenly gave way.

Two bodies were recovered from the debris and moved to Nairobi City Mortuary, where they await identification and post-mortem examinations.

Rescue efforts by the Nairobi County Disaster Response Team continued at the scene amid fears that an unknown number of other people could still be trapped beneath the rubble.

Police said the operation to clear the debris and search for survivors was ongoing.

The identities of the deceased had not been established by the time of filing the report.

And police in Awendo, Migori County, are investigating the death of an unidentified middle-aged man whose body was recovered from an abandoned mining shaft.

According to police report, the incident was reported on Thursday at about 6:34 p.m. after members of the public spotted a body floating in a flooded abandoned mining shaft at the farm in Kineni Village.

Police visited the scene in North Sakwa Location, Kanyasrega Sub-location, where they found that residents had already retrieved the body from the water.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, described as a middle-aged Luo man, was last seen alive on June 23 at around 5 p.m. while allegedly intoxicated. Police suspect he may have accidentally fallen into the abandoned shaft later that night.

The body, which was partially decomposed, was moved to the Migori Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits identification and a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the man’s identity and the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
