Two Firearms, Including AK-47 And G3 Rifle, Recovered In Police Operation In Samburu County

In a police operation carried out on December 26 in the Achers Post area of Samburu County, two firearms were recovered, including an AK-47 and a G3 rifle.

The operation, which also yielded nine bullets and a separate magazine, took place at a suspect’s house, according to authorities.

The operation was prompted by a tip-off received by officers stationed at the Kalama multi-agency roadblock, who were informed about an individual believed to be in possession of firearms in the Waso area.

This came after a robbery incident in which a man armed with a rifle entered a shop, held attendants and customers at gunpoint, and made off with valuables.

CCTV footage captured the harrowing scene.

Police teams were dispatched to the area to locate the suspect and the firearms.

While the weapons were recovered, the suspect managed to flee the scene.

The firearms have been handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for ballistic analysis, and authorities are investigating whether the weapons have been used in other crimes.

Efforts to track down the suspect are ongoing.

The area is part of a broader multi-agency operation aimed at combating cattle rustling, a major issue in the region.

As part of the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, which has led to the recovery of 172 illegal firearms, authorities report a significant reduction in cattle rustling incidents.

The operation, launched in February 2023, has resulted in a 62% decrease in such cases, with stolen livestock dropping from 63,054 to 23,668.

Additionally, 10,173 head of livestock have been recovered, and 250 suspects, including 14 political figures, have been arrested and prosecuted.

Operation Maliza Uhalifu is a joint security initiative involving the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), targeting rising banditry, violence, and cattle rustling across nine counties, including Samburu, Turkana, and Baringo.

The operation continues to focus on restoring peace and stability in these high-risk areas.
