Tragedy struck residents of Sunpark Residence in Syokimau, Machakos County after two men drowned in a swimming pool at the estate in a heartbreaking incident that has raised fresh concerns over safety compliance.
According to management, the incident involved a day guard stationed in Phase Two who accessed the swimming pool without authorization on Sunday.
The guard reportedly did not possess swimming skills and drowned shortly after entering the pool.
In a brave but ill-fated rescue attempt, a male adult cleaner who was attending to duties at the estate’s gym rushed to assist after noticing the situation.
Unfortunately, he too lacked swimming skills and drowned while trying to save his colleague.
Emergency medical personnel were immediately called to the scene and responded promptly.
However, despite their efforts to resuscitate the two, both men were pronounced dead.
Following the incident, the management directed Fitness Fort, which operates the gym and pool facilities, to close the swimming pool indefinitely pending a comprehensive review of safety measures.
Officials said the facility will remain shut until all required safety regulations are fully implemented and verified to guarantee the safety of residents and staff.
Residents have been urged to strictly avoid the swimming pool area until further communication is issued.
The incident has left the Syokimau community in shock, with calls for enhanced safety standards, clearer access controls and mandatory supervision at shared residential amenities to prevent similar tragedies in future.
Police said they were investigating the incident.
