Babu Owino questions source of tear gas at rally, defends linda mwananchi movement

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has questioned claims that members of his faction lobbed tear gas at themselves during a recent rally, arguing that only the government has access to such equipment.

Speaking during a televised interview, the lawmaker dismissed allegations that protesters affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi wing of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) were responsible for the chaos witnessed at the gathering.

“Do you know any place in this country where tear gas is manufactured? The government imports tear gas. How can an ordinary citizen access tear gas if they are not a police officer?” Babu posed, suggesting that civilians could not legally obtain the crowd-control equipment without state involvement.

He further claimed that handcuffs were also recovered from individuals who allegedly attempted to disrupt the rally, raising questions about how such security equipment ended up in civilian hands. According to the MP, the presence of tear gas and police gear pointed to a deliberate attempt to frame his faction.

Babu maintained that his supporters did not retaliate despite alleged provocation. “We don’t respond to evil with evil,” he said, adding that the movement is fighting for unemployed and economically struggling youth who he claimed are often exploited for political violence.

The MP argued that many young people involved in unrest are victims of poverty and joblessness, saying his faction’s broader agenda is to address unemployment, economic inequality, and lack of opportunities for the youth.

Responding to remarks by leaders including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga who have downplayed the strength of the Linda Mwananchi faction, Babu dismissed claims that they are a minority within ODM.

“They have the party, but we have the party followers,” he said, asserting that grassroots support remains firmly behind their camp.

He reiterated that he is not leaving ODM but is instead seeking to take over its leadership to protect what he described as the party’s founding ideals under the late Raila Odinga.

According to Babu, ODM was built on democracy, social justice, constitutionalism, and the empowerment of ordinary Kenyans.

Addressing speculation about rivalry within the movement, Babu likened his political alignment with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to the relationship between the sun and the moon.

“It is not about competition; it is about completion,” he said, suggesting that their roles complement rather than compete with each other.

The remarks come amid deepening divisions within ODM as rival factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, raising fresh questions about the party’s unity and future direction.
