Two women have been arrested in Busia after detectives recovered three small bales of suspected cannabis sativa allegedly concealed in their luggage.
The suspects, identified as Jonabu Ali Sururu and Fatuma Omar Namadiki, were intercepted at the Busia Bus Stage following a tip-off received by detectives.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two had just arrived at the bus stage and were preparing to board a bus when officers moved in.
Detectives subjected their luggage to a thorough search, leading to the discovery of three small bales of cannabis wrapped in black polythene bags.
The narcotics had allegedly been concealed beneath raw cassava and avocados in an attempt to evade detection.
“Acting on a tip-off, detectives in Busia intercepted the two suspects at the Busia Bus Stage moments after arriving to board a bus,” the DCI said.
The two women were arrested at the scene and escorted to Busia Police Station, where they remain in custody as officers process the case ahead of their arraignment.
The recovered narcotics have also been secured as exhibits as investigations into the suspected drug trafficking continue.
The latest arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt the movement and distribution of illicit drugs in the region.
