Born in Mukurweini and raised in Thika, Victor Maina ‘s rise from the gritty streets of Nairobi to the billionaire’s club is nothing short of extraordinary.
He began as a hawker in Marikiti and Muthurwa markets, peddling small wares just to get by.
Life was harsh, but Maina’s grit, faith, and unshakable belief that “no struggle is permanent” fueled his journey forward.
The streets sharpened his eye for opportunity and toughened his spirit for the battles ahead.
Leaving hawking behind, he ventured into the quarry business.
His game-changing moment came when he boldly imported advanced machine-cut stone equipment from Italy, pioneering a revolution in the construction industry and laying the cornerstone of his wealth.

By the mid-2000s, Maina had his sights set on real estate.
In 2006, he acquired the iconic Ronald Ngala Street building, then home to the legendary Jack n Jill Supermarket for Sh 72 million.
Though the building languished unfinished and draped in green safety nets for years, it marked his dramatic entry into high-stakes property.
Today, the same structure is being transformed into Wholesale Mall OTC, a rising retail hub.
That acquisition sparked a fierce court battle, culminating in the dramatic demolition of Jack n Jill in 2013.
But for Maina, it was just another step in a much larger story.
He went on to establish Maathai Supermarkets, one of Kenya’s fastest-growing retail chains with outlets in Nairobi, Thika, Karatina, Nyeri, Embu, Murang’a, and Meru.
Named after the late Nobel Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, whom he admired for her courage and resilience, the chain now rivals some of the country’s biggest players.
Its first Nairobi CBD branch opened in 2014, cementing Maina’s footprint in the competitive retail sector.
But Maina’s empire extends far beyond retail.
He has invested heavily in real estate, hospitality, and entertainment, owning Klub Image Hotel and Klub Liquid Cash in Thika, multiple residential properties, and a prime 17-acre parcel of land tied up in a long-running court case.

Along Thika Road near Juja, he once ran a quarry strategically located on the highway.
As machine-cut stones gained prominence, the quarry site evolved into the central distribution hub for Maathai Supermarkets, proof of his ability to turn every venture into a springboard for the next.
From street hawker to retail and real estate tycoon, Victor Maina has built his empire brick by brick.
His story is not just about wealth, it is about vision, audacity, and the relentless pursuit of growth.
