This means Harambee Stars will not proceed to the semifinals, a development that has devastated many Kenyans, among them Mike Sonko.
The politician took to Instagram on the evening of Friday, August 22, and posted a video of himself weeping and sobbing uncontrollably following Harambee Stars’ loss.
In the video, Sonko could be seen crying like a baby as he joined other Kenyans in ‘condoling’ with Harambee Stars’ players.
In his caption, the flamboyant politician disclosed he has never cried like he did today, holding it had even affected his mouth.
“Haki Leo nimelia mpaka mdomo yangu ikakaa kama rosecoco,” Sonko wrote.
His followers felt his pain and duly joined him in the comments section where they expressed their disappointments following Harambee Stars’ loss.
Others, however, jokingly noted that Sonko was celebrating because Harambee Stars’ loss had saved him some Sh 400 million he had initially promised the team.

Sonko had pledged a staggering Sh 400 million reward to the Harambee Stars if they win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The amount was to add to President William Ruto’s earlier promise of Sh 600 million.
Then, the total potential payout stood at Sh 1 billion, which is the highest-ever cash incentive for a Kenyan national team.
Speaking after Ruto’s meeting with the squad on August 2, 2025, Sonko said his offer was not a competition with the Head of State but rather a show of support for the national team.
“The President has done a good gesture; it will motivate the players. I am not in competition with the President, but mine will be just to support his gesture,” Sonko said.
“I want our team to clinch the trophy. If they do that, I will give them Sh400 million. Boys, you have Sh 1 billion if you win,” he added.
He also urged other leaders to rally behind the team by offering tangible motivation.
