What Led To The Burundian Man Fainting At The KNCHR Offices?

A Burundian national collapsed at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) offices on Kasuku Road, near Lenana Road.

According to police reports, they received a call about an individual who had lost consciousness inside the office.

Upon arrival, they discovered an 18-year-old man, later identified as Leonard Habimana, lying unconscious on the floor.

Habimana, who identified himself as a refugee registered with UNHCR, reportedly collapsed suddenly.

A search of his belongings revealed a torn sachet of rat poison containing some residue, as well as a water bottle that held a dark liquid resembling a mixture of poison and water.

Emergency medical personnel provided assistance to Habimana, who was subsequently taken to Mbagathi District Hospital for treatment, where he is currently in stable condition.

In a separate incident in Ahenyo village, Kisumu, police reported that 39-year-old Maurice Omondi Onyango took his own life on Saturday.

Authorities revealed that he hanged himself from a tree using a sisal rope, and no suicide note was found.

His body has been taken to JOOTRH mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, in Kieni East, Nyeri County, 53-year-old Paul Maina Gakuru also committed suicide by hanging himself with a sisal rope.

Police believe he may have ingested herbicides, specifically Rocket 44EC and Bestox, before carrying out the act.

His remains have been transported to Mary Immaculate Hospital Mortuary in Mweiga, pending an autopsy.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 703,000 people die by suicide annually, making it the fourth leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29.

The organization attributes many of these incidents to various factors, including unemployment, bereavement, academic pressures, legal troubles, and financial difficulties.

Other contributing factors may include bullying, previous suicide attempts, family history of suicide, substance abuse, depression, and bipolar disorder.
