A large portion of Kenyans are facing financial difficulties that will prevent them from celebrating the Christmas season, according to a recent survey by Infotrak.
The report revealed that 86% of respondents indicated they could not afford the expenses associated with the festivities.
The survey highlighted significant regional differences in the ability to celebrate.
All respondents from Nairobi reported financial constraints, while other regions reported varying levels of affordability: Nyanza (80%), Western (91%), Rift Valley (83%), Central (91%), Eastern (90%), and North Eastern (41%).
The study also revealed demographic trends, with 89% of the respondents being male and 83% female.
In addition, 10% of those surveyed expressed no interest in participating in Christmas celebrations, 6% noted they would be working, and 2% said they are Muslim and do not observe the holiday.
Despite the financial strain, many respondents plan to spend the holiday with loved ones. 63% said they would be with family, 28% intended to attend church, and 27% would spend time with friends.
About 15% plan to stay at home, while a smaller portion, 11%, will go on holiday, 5% will engage in partying and drinking, and 4% plan to visit the sick or volunteer at a children’s home.
The survey also found that 60% of respondents felt they would not be able to celebrate Christmas as they had in previous years, reflecting the broader financial challenges facing the country.
Conducted on December 20, 2024, the poll covered all 47 counties and eight regions of Kenya.
