Two Polish tourists were killed in a tragic accident on Wednesday morning involving their vehicle and a trailer at the Mariakani Maji Ya Chumvi area along the Mombasa highway.
The accident occurred at around 7 am when the vehicle, which was carrying two couples, collided head-on with a trailer.
The two men in the vehicle died instantly, while the two women were severely injured, with one of them in critical condition.
The driver and a guide, who were also in the vehicle, were rushed to the hospital with injuries.
The couples were traveling from Diani to Nairobi when the accident took place. Following the collision, the driver of the trailer fled the scene.
National Police Service spokesperson, Dr. Resila Onyango, confirmed the incident, stating that the injured were in stable condition and receiving medical attention.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
This accident adds to the growing concerns about road safety in Kenya, particularly on the Mombasa highway, which has gained a reputation for being one of the country’s most dangerous due to the frequent fatal accidents recorded there.
The accident comes amid a troubling increase in road fatalities across the country.
According to police statistics, between January and November 2024, a total of 4,282 people were killed in road accidents, marking a rise from 3,901 deaths during the same period in 2023.
Additionally, over 10,662 people were seriously injured in accidents this year, compared to 9,501 last year.
Pedestrians have been the most vulnerable group, with 1,637 fatalities reported in 2024, up from 1,413 in 2023.
Passengers also saw an increase in fatalities, with 788 deaths in 2024 compared to 673 in 2023.
A total of 21,620 accidents have been recorded so far in 2024, a significant increase from the 20,191 incidents reported in the previous year.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has pointed to several leading causes of fatal accidents, including hit-and-run incidents, tyre bursts, loss of control by vehicles and motorcycles, improper overtaking, and failure to maintain proper lane discipline, all of which have resulted in dangerous head-on collisions.
As authorities continue to investigate the causes of these tragic accidents, they have urged drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent further loss of life.
