Kamukunji Police Station is set for a major transformation after the government identified it as the proposed headquarters of the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, in a move aimed at strengthening security coordination across the capital.
The station, located in one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial areas, will be upgraded into a modern security complex equipped with operational offices, police accommodation facilities and advanced coordination infrastructure.
The new headquarters will also house the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4), which will support real-time monitoring, communication and coordinated response to security incidents across Nairobi City County.
Internal Security Secretary Thomas Sakah led a multi-agency technical team on an assessment visit to the site to evaluate its suitability for the project.
The team included representatives from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police Service, Administration Police Service, Nairobi City County Government and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development.
Speaking during the assessment, officials said the project is part of broader efforts to modernize security operations in the capital, which serves as Kenya’s main commercial and financial hub while facing complex urban security challenges.
“The establishment of the metropolitan police headquarters will enhance coordination among security agencies and improve response mechanisms through integrated technology and better operational structures,” officials noted.
The proposed facility is expected to provide a centralized command point where security agencies can share intelligence, coordinate operations and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
Construction of the new security complex is scheduled to commence in August 2026, marking a significant step in the government’s plan to strengthen policing infrastructure in Nairobi.
Authorities say the project will contribute to improving public safety, enhancing surveillance capabilities and creating a more coordinated approach to managing security within the metropolitan area.
