The Ministry of Education has launched the third phase of distributing assistive devices and technologies aimed at improving access to learning for students with disabilities across the country.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba officially flagged off the exercise at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in Kasarani, Nairobi, where the government announced plans to deliver 11,139 assistive devices to learners with visual and physical impairments.
The devices will benefit 321 inclusive education programmes and special schools spread across all 47 counties, as part of efforts to promote equal learning opportunities for children with disabilities.
Speaking during the launch, CS Ogamba said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that disability does not prevent learners from accessing quality education.
“Every learner deserves an opportunity to participate fully in education. Through the provision of assistive technologies, we are removing barriers and creating a more inclusive learning environment for all,” Ogamba said.
The Cabinet Secretary noted that the support will not be limited to primary and special schools, adding that the programme will also be expanded to senior schools and tertiary institutions, including universities.
He said the move is aimed at ensuring learners with disabilities continue receiving the necessary support as they progress through different levels of education.
“The journey of inclusion must continue beyond basic education. We are extending these interventions to senior schools and institutions of higher learning so that learners with disabilities can pursue their academic goals without unnecessary limitations,” he added.
The Ministry said the assistive devices will help improve learners’ participation in classrooms, enhance independence and strengthen access to education for students with special needs.
Through KISE, the government has continued to implement programmes focused on inclusive education, teacher support and the provision of specialized learning resources.
Officials said the latest distribution phase will strengthen efforts to ensure that schools across the country are better equipped to support learners with diverse educational needs.
