Can People See What You Search on TikTok?

TikTok has quickly become one of the most popular social media platforms, attracting millions of users who share and explore content daily. Whether you’re searching for dance trends, viral challenges, or tutorials, you might wonder: can people see what you search on TikTok? The simple answer is no—your TikTok search history is private. But there are a few exceptions and privacy settings you should be aware of. Let’s explore what TikTok shows others and what remains hidden.

TikTok Search History

When you search for something on TikTok—whether it’s a username, hashtag, or topic—your searches are saved only on your personal account. No one else can see your search history, not even your followers or the people you search for. TikTok does not send notifications to users when they’re searched for or when their profile is viewed, unless a specific setting is enabled.

TikTok also does not make your search terms public or visible to other users. The platform uses your search history to tailor your content recommendations, especially on the For You Page (FYP). For example, if you frequently search for food content, TikTok may start showing you more cooking videos. But again, only TikTok’s algorithm sees this—not your friends or other users.

Profile Views

While your search activity remains private, TikTok has a feature called Profile View History that allows users to see who has visited their profile. This is the only scenario where your activity might become visible—if you search for someone and then visit their profile.

However, this feature is optional and works both ways. You can only see who viewed your profile if you’ve turned on profile view history, and others can only see that you viewed their profile if they’ve also turned it on. The feature shows profile views from the past 30 days, and you can disable it at any time in your privacy settings.

Suggested Accounts and Search Recommendations

Sometimes, people wonder why certain accounts appear under TikTok’s “Suggested Accounts” or during search suggestions. These recommendations are often based on mutual friends, contacts, shared interests, or similar usernames—not because you searched for them.

If you’ve synced your phone contacts or Facebook friends with TikTok, it might suggest those people as connections. However, TikTok does not alert anyone when they appear in your search bar or if you type their name.

Clearing Your Search History

If you’re concerned about privacy or just want to clear clutter, TikTok allows you to delete your search history. You can do this by going to your profile, tapping the search icon, and selecting the option to clear all previous searches. This helps reset your suggestions and gives you more control over what appears in your search results.
