Doctors at Nairobi Hospital are working under harassment, poor conditions, and constant fear of job loss, according to the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
Addressing the media on Tuesday, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah condemned the hospital’s management for mistreating medical staff and failing to address their grievances.
Dr. Atellah stated that some medics have been forced to resign due to unbearable working conditions, while others continue to endure the harassment out of fear of victimization.
“The Nairobi Hospital management has been harassing and mistreating our members, slashing their medical cover under the guise of financial constraints.
Meanwhile, allegations of financial mismanagement are rampant, with the hard work of health workers benefiting a select few who have become overnight millionaires,” said Dr. Atellah.
The union issued a seven-day ultimatum, threatening to call for a strike if their demands are not met.
The KMPDU further accused Nairobi Hospital Board Chairperson Chris Bichage of disrupting an Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 4, 2024.
The union alleged that hired goons posed as legitimate members of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA) to intimidate and physically assault genuine members attempting to impeach the board.
“Doctors and respected members of this once-great hospital were publicly humiliated and assaulted.
The rogue board chairman and his allies are responsible for hiring these goons to suppress efforts aimed at rescuing the hospital from collapse,” said Dr. Atellah.
KMPDU called on the Kenya Hospital Association, Admitting Staff Association, Nairobi Hospital staff, and government agencies to intervene and “save the facility from imminent closure.”
The union is demanding the immediate resignation of the entire board of directors, including Chairperson Chris Bichage and the acting CEO, as part of its efforts to restore the hospital’s reputation and working environment.
