At least five protesters participating in the End Femicide movement were arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
The demonstrators were voicing their concerns over the rising cases of femicide and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country.
As the march gained momentum, police responded by firing teargas canisters to disperse the protesters, who were peacefully marching through the streets of Nairobi.
The use of force, including the arrest of peaceful demonstrators, was condemned by Amnesty International, which decried the police’s actions against unarmed citizens exercising their right to protest.
The End Femicide campaign, which runs annually from November 25 to December 10, is part of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, a movement aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls.
The protests, which saw participants carrying placards demanding justice and an end to femicide, were a powerful display of solidarity in the fight against GBV.
Despite the police interference, the movement continues to call for action to address the severe impact of gender-based violence in Kenya.
