At least seven students were injured and hospitalized early Tuesday morning, December 10, after a fire broke out in Hall 5 at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The incident occurred around 3 a.m., prompting students to flee for safety, according to police and university officials.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
Many students lost their valuables in the blaze, which took several hours to contain.
Firefighters and disaster response teams managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. Injured students received immediate medical attention, with the university administration facilitating their transfer to hospitals.
Unverified claims suggested the fire may have been an act of arson targeting the 5,000 students residing in the hostel.
However, authorities have not confirmed these allegations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an investigation into the incident, and police stated they are working alongside Kiambu County officials to establish the cause of the fire.
Videos from the scene showed the upper floors of the hostel engulfed in flames.
This marks the second consecutive fire incident in a JKUAT accommodation facility, raising concerns over safety measures on campus.
Police assured the public that the injured students are in stable condition as investigations continue.
