DAP Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah at Milimani Court in Nairobi, showing their support before his arraignment.
Wamalwa shared a short video on social media of the trio together, where they made a solidarity gesture by raising two fingers in the shape of the letter “V.”
“In solidarity with my brothers Okiya Omtatah and Kalonzo Musyoka at Milimani Court, where he and other protesters are being held before their arraignment,” Wamalwa posted.
Omtatah had been arrested on Monday for his involvement in protests against the rising cases of abductions and enforced disappearances of government critics.
He was detained alongside other activists who had staged a demonstration along Aga Khan Walk in Nairobi’s city center, chaining themselves together as a symbolic act of resistance.
The surge in abductions, which has seen over 10 cases reported in December alone and more than 80 this year, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, has triggered widespread anger.
Despite government denials, human rights groups and concerned citizens have demanded action, calling for the immediate release of those allegedly abducted by security agents and an end to unlawful arrests.
Among those missing recently are activists Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti Njeru, and Bernard Kavuli.
Earlier, Omtatah had filed a petition at the High Court demanding that the Inspector General of Police, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the National Intelligence Service produce the missing persons.
Speaking to the press after filing the case, Omtatah accused the government of using intimidation tactics to silence dissent.
“The government is abducting its people in an attempt to intimidate them. For them to deny knowledge of what is happening is unacceptable,” he stated.
