A funeral service in Ngurubani, Mwea, Kirinyaga, took an unexpected turn when a swarm of bees attacked 20 mourners, including several officiating pastors.
The incident occurred at Huduma Estate shortly after the service for Faith Njeri Murigu, a former teacher, had begun.
As mourners gathered to pay their respects, the bees swarmed from a nearby tree, causing panic and forcing attendees to flee for safety.
Reverend Irene Gitari, who was present, described how some mourners initially stayed behind to pray, but the bees relentlessly continued to swarm, eventually forcing everyone to seek shelter.
A doctor who treated the victims confirmed that 20 people, including family members and clergy, required medical attention.
The Reverend explained that the funeral service had gone smoothly until the group returned home to continue with the burial rites.
“The bees came from a tree in the yard and attacked after someone, possibly wearing perfume or oil with a honey-like scent, provoked them.
The bees chased everyone away. Some of us had to return later to finish the burial,” she said.
Ngari Muthang’ato, the master of ceremonies, confirmed that the bees attacked shortly after the funeral procession had returned from the ACK St. Luke Wanguru Church service.
Despite the chaos, the burial was eventually completed late in the evening, though only a few people remained for the final rites.
