Grade 5 pupil drowns while fetching water from River Yala, Siaya County


An 11-year-old girl has drowned in River Yala while fetching water with her friends in Kosoro Village, Gem Yala Sub-County, Siaya County.

The deceased was a Grade 5 pupil at Yala Township Comprehensive Primary School.

Police officers visited the scene and established that the girl had gone to the river with her friends to fetch water when she accidentally slipped and fell into the river.

One of her friends reportedly alerted her mother, who rushed to the scene. With the assistance of members of the public, they managed to retrieve the girl’s body, but she had already died.

The report further indicates that the mother had gone to church in Yala Township and left her daughter at home.

Police documented the scene before the body was moved to Yala Level IV Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy.

Elsewhere, police in Bungoma South are investigating the death of a man whose body was found floating in River Nzoia on Sunday morning.

The deceased, identified as Nicholas Kisiang’ani, was discovered at around 11 a.m. on September 13, 2026, approximately three kilometres north of Dorofu Police Post.

Police officers from Sang’alo Police Station and detectives from DCI Bungoma South visited the scene and confirmed the incident. Family members subsequently identified the body.

Crime Scene Investigation personnel from Bungoma South processed and documented the scene before the body was retrieved from the river.

The body was moved to Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

And police in Kuria West, Migori County, are investigating the death of an unidentified man who died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Kehancha Township.

The man, an African male adult estimated to be about 30 years old, was reportedly brought to Oasis Hospital in an unconscious state on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at around 12:06 p.m.

The man was brought to the hospital by three people who used a Probox vehicle. They reportedly told hospital staff that they had found him at Kehancha Stadium.

The unidentified man was admitted and placed under treatment but died at around midnight.

Police officers from Kehancha Police Station and detectives from DCI Kuria West visited the hospital, where they found the body lying in one of the wards. No visible injuries were observed.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.

Police are working to establish the man’s identity, the circumstances under which he was brought to the hospital and the cause of his death.
