TikTok has become more than just a platform for sharing short videos—it’s now a place where users connect, chat, and build communities. Whether you’re catching up with friends, replying to comments, or receiving updates from creators you follow, knowing how to check your messages on TikTok is essential for staying engaged. The app has a simple, user-friendly messaging feature that allows private conversations and notifications in one place.
Accessing Your Inbox
To check your messages, the first step is to open the TikTok app on your phone. Once you’re on the home screen, look at the bottom menu bar. Tap on the Inbox icon, which is usually located next to the “+” button used for creating content. This Inbox tab is where all your notifications and direct messages are stored.

Once inside the Inbox, you’ll see different types of updates. These include likes, comments, mentions, and most importantly, direct messages from other TikTok users. If someone you follow or who follows you has sent you a private message, it will appear here.
Opening and Reading Direct Messages
When you spot a message from a friend or a follower, tap on their name or profile picture to open the conversation. This takes you into a private chat window, where you can read messages, view shared videos, and continue the conversation. TikTok also allows you to reply with text, emojis, GIFs, or even share TikTok videos directly within the chat.
If you are new to TikTok or haven’t used the messaging feature before, you might notice that you can only receive messages from users who meet certain criteria, like mutual followers or friends. This privacy setting is designed to prevent unwanted messages and keep the platform safe for everyone.
Managing Message Requests and Notifications
Sometimes, users you don’t follow may try to message you. These messages don’t show up directly in your main inbox but go into a separate Message Requests section. To view them, scroll through your inbox and look for a tab or prompt labeled “Message Requests.” From there, you can choose to accept or decline the message. If accepted, the user’s messages will appear in your main inbox going forward.
TikTok also sends notifications when you receive a message. If you’ve disabled app notifications on your phone, you may not be alerted in real-time. To ensure you never miss a message, go to your device’s settings and make sure notifications for TikTok are turned on. Within the app, you can also adjust who can send you messages under Privacy Settings to match your comfort level.
