Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro has been removed from his position as chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee in the latest reshuffle of parliamentary committees.
Nyoro, who had been leading the crucial committee, will now serve as a regular member instead.
Nyoro, a key ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has long been criticized for his perceived neutrality in political matters and has often been absent from several of President William Ruto’s key events, including the swearing-in of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
He also refrained from voting during the impeachment proceedings against Gachagua, further solidifying his image as a political fence-sitter.
As a result, he is now seen as one of the detractors of the government’s agenda in Parliament.
Reports suggest that Nyoro’s position as head of the influential Budget and Appropriations Committee will be handed over to Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi.
Other Gachagua allies who have lost their committee roles include Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, Juja MP George Koimburi, and Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngogoyo.
Gakuya, who was previously the chair of the Trade Committee, will now serve as a member, while Ngogoyo, a former member of the Environment, Forestry, and Mining Committee, has also been removed from his position.
In a related development, nominated MP Irene Mayaka has been appointed to replace Kibra MP as chair of the Regional Integration Committee.
Additionally, several Gachagua-aligned MPs have been reassigned to the Services and Facilities Committee, which handles catering services for legislators.
These include Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, who previously chaired the Constitution Implementation Oversight Committee; Roysambu MP Mwafrika Augustine Kamande; Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara, who was on the Lands Committee; and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya.
National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro explained that certain committees’ terms had expired during the previous session, and as a result, the committees had not been convening.
He added that over 90 MPs had expressed interest in joining the Budget and Appropriations Committee.
The reconstitution of the committees, Osoro said, took into account regional issues, gender balance, political affiliations, and negotiations.
