Motorists and passengers traveling on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway and the Kamandura-Mai Mahiu Road were caught in a massive traffic jam on Friday following a trailer accident.
The crash, which occurred early in the morning, caused a significant blockage on both roads, leading to their closure and forcing many travelers to spend the night stranded in their vehicles.
The accident involved two large trailers, one of which overturned, spilling cargo across the highway and making it impassable.
As a result, traffic backed up for several kilometers, with motorists and passengers unable to move.
Many travelers heading home for the Christmas holidays were particularly affected, with some abandoning their vehicles in search of alternative routes, while others were forced to stay in their cars overnight due to the lack of clear detours.
Despite the swift response from traffic police and emergency services, the road remained closed for several hours, causing considerable delays.
The authorities worked tirelessly to clear the wreckage, while tow trucks and cranes were brought in to remove the trailers and debris from the scene.
Efforts were further complicated by heavy rain, which slowed down the clearance process.
The Limuru police commander confirmed the incident and reassured the public that the trailers had been successfully cleared.
He stated that the road would soon reopen, and traffic officers were working around the clock to alleviate the congestion.
“We understand the frustration of travelers, especially during this peak festive season, and we are doing everything we can to restore normal flow as quickly as possible,” he added.
While the roadblock has since been cleared, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by travelers during peak seasons, especially on major highways.
Authorities are urging motorists to plan their journeys in advance and to be patient as they navigate potentially congested roads.
