Police in Nyamira County have launched investigations after unknown persons allegedly poured a substance suspected to be oil into a fish pond containing 3,000 fingerlings, causing losses estimated at Sh1 million.
The incident was reported on Sunday morning by a 35-year-old fisheries director in Nyamira County.
The official discovered the suspected contamination when he woke up and found an oily substance floating on the water in his fish pond, which contained about 3,000 fingerlings.
Police officers from Magwagwa Police Station visited the scene, documented the incident and commenced investigations.
Samples of the contaminated water are expected to be forwarded to the Government Chemist for analysis to determine the nature of the substance, while officials from the Nyamira County Fisheries Department have been notified to assess and value the damage.
Investigators are working to establish who may have been behind the suspected act of sabotage and the motive for contaminating the pond. Police had made no arrests by the time of filing this report.
And police have launched investigations after a gang of more than 10 armed suspects raided a coffee factory in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, tied up watchmen and stole coffee parchment and office equipment valued at approximately Sh1.8 million.
The robbery occurred at around 1 a.m. on Sunday at Kiriko Coffee Factory.
Police said three watchmen reported that the gang gained access to the factory by cutting through the perimeter fence.
The suspects rounded up the guards, tied them up and proceeded to break into the factory offices, where they stole an HP laptop, an Epson printer, a BWS weighing scale and the store keys.
Using the stolen keys, the gang accessed the coffee store and made away with 30 bags of Grade One coffee and 12 additional bags from the drying beds, bringing the total number of stolen bags to 42.
The watchmen managed to free themselves at about 5 a.m. and sounded the factory siren, attracting members of the public. However, the suspects had already escaped.
Police officers led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Kamwangi and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Gatundu North visited the scene and established that the factory did not have CCTV cameras.
Investigators also believe the stolen coffee and equipment were loaded into two unidentified vehicles used by the gang to flee the scene.
Police have not made any arrests and are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend the suspects.
